SUMMARY: Copenhagen

Denmark was the third country we’ve passed through, and the end of our tour of Scandinavia. From what we saw, it is a cross between Sweden and Holland. Many cultural similarities with the other Scandinavian countries, but a very similar architecture and city feel to what we’ve seen from the Netherlands. We will admit that we did not (and likely could never) spend enough time to appreciate all of the subtleties that make Denmark Danish. We are merely drawing from 4 days in and around Copenhagen.

Things we liked:
  • Regardless of the time of day, you can always find many people in bars drinking beers
  • Emphasis on good coffee, until now it has just been an emphasis on a LOT of coffee
  • Lots of good bread in bakeries and in sandwich shops
  • Lockers at museums would take a deposit when you locked up your stuff, then give you your deposit back when you returned the key (in complete contrast to Norway)
  • Copenhagen has many movie theatres showing all the best of Hollywood as well as local and European films
Things we didn’t like:
  • Expensive, though that is becoming our expectation for Scandinavia
  • Weather seemed always cold and windy, and rain was never far off (could just be our luck)
  • Runners would not follow any standards for which side of the path to run on, and would not change course for us
Interesting findings:
  • Women like to shave part of their heads leaving hair long on top
  • Some men grow pretty outrageous facial hair, we saw a few huge bushy beards, under-chin only beards, and twirly moustaches
  • Graffiti was everywhere
  • The city was full of Juice and Smoothie bars
  • People would walk (or drive, on lawnmower like machines) their polse wagons around town in the mornings to set up shop for the day
The following are some pictures that didn’t make it to other blog posts:

  1. Loving your blog! So great to read your summary of Copenhagen, is it a coincidence that your preference for finer coffee accompanies the supply of finer pastries and breads! It's good to see that the weather has not deterred you from enjoying the culture and excitement of the city. We haven't heard too much about the character of the people so far, so the hair styles must really be interesting, similar to the graffiti.
Nice to see that the traveling turtle is also taking in the culture, exquisite movie theater and fine coffee and beer! lucky t.
