Where are we?

SUMMARY: Germany, Part II

This has been our second pass through Germany. We stayed in Munich for 6 days taking side trips to Erding to tour a brewery and to Fussen to tour a castle. We have really enjoyed Germany (again). Munich, we agreed, has been our second favourite city after Berlin. It feels a little smaller, but has a little more charm. Beer culture is another thing that we both appreciate and Munich has that in spades.

What we liked:
  • Beer halls and beer breweries
  • Excellent public transportation system
  • Pretzels
  • The public market, especially our favourite soup and beer stands
  • Great running path along the river
  • Erdinger beer has gone way up in our list of favourite beers
  • Maypoles
  • Bakeries everywhere
What we didn’t like:
  • Hax’n (for Jackie)
  • Public Holidays meant stores and museums closed mid-week
  • Crafts store always being closed, except on first day
  • While the beer served at the biergarten in the Viktualienmarkt was supposed to rotate every day or two, it seemed to only sell Hofbrau (not a bad beer, just would have been nice to see some variety)
  • High prices of souvenirs (steins, wooden crafts)
Interesting findings:
  • We saw more red pants here than anywhere since Stockholm
  • Munich reminded us the most of Berlin, with some major shopping areas, but most sections seeming smaller and more residential
As usual, here are some pictures that didn't make the original cut.
